Stats on Alzheimer’s Disease in America

Family caregiving and the rise of Alzheimer’s Disease are tightly connected. Here are some recent statistics about the disease and its spread throughout the United States. There are also links at the bottom for the deeper researcher.

  • Nearly 7 million Americans currently have Alzheimer’s, and an estimated 6.9 million of them are age 65 and older in 2024. About 73% of those affected are age 75 or older.
  • Approximately 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older (around 10.9%) has Alzheimer’s.
  • Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
  • The lifetime risk for Alzheimer’s at age 45 is 1 in 5 for women and 1 in 10 for men.
  • Over 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, contributing an estimated 18.4 billion hours of care valued at nearly $350 billion in 2023
