S+P Global Report: Working while caregiving. It’s complicated

On May 16, 2024, research firm S+P Global, in partnership with AARP, released a report titled “Working while caregiving: It’s complicated.”

The report lays out the problem facing working family caregivers and notes that many employers are implementing workplace policies to support working family caregivers, but that much more needs to be done.

Here at the Support For Caregivers Network, we appreciate the succinct definition of family caregivers as people who “offer support to an older adult or an adult with a chronic or disabling condition.” We struggled with a definition and we welcome this easy solution while noting that it may not include caregivers of non-adults with special needs.

S+P global surveyed 1200 full-time and part-time employees who provide more that six hours per week of family care to an adult. They focused on employees of larger (1,000+ employees) companies and acknowledge that this means the report is not reflective of the broader working population.

Here is a summary of findings. Click the link at the end of this summary for the full report.

  • Work-care conflicts lead to stress and changes in employment.
  • Women, lower-income households and employees without children are less satisfied
  • Support for remote workers matters for retention
  • Caregivers of children are perceived to have more support than caregivers of adults
  • Flexibility is paramount
  • Some benefits are unused
  • Access to family caregiving policies and benefits is improving
  • Post-COVID-19 policy adoption and changes
  • Inflation compounds caregivers’ tight budgets
